We practice an eclectic, flexible approach to counselling,

tailored to your needs and grounded in proven treatments:

While there are many types of therapy available, our therapists rely on evidence-based approaches to guide our treatment. Each therapist has training in one or more of these approaches, so be sure to ask your therapist what kind of therapy they practice.

As well, since every person and situation is unique, rather than offer you one approach, together we will explore strategies from various approaches and use the ones that work best for you.

The treatments we use can lead to changes quickly and they produce results that last: our clients normally report experiencing noticeable positive changes within 4 to 6 counselling sessions. We invite you to read a brief description below about each type of therapy that use at our practice:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT)

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) (Learn more about ACT for Depression and Anxiety here)

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

  • Emotion-Focused Couples Therapy (EFT)

  • Eye movement desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

  • Graduated Exposure Therapy

If one or more approaches seem like a good fit for you, you can read more about them online here. Before booking your appointment, please visit the "Book Online" page here to see which therapist practices that type of therapy. You can also book your appointment online on the "Book Online" page.

Cognitive

Cognitive

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is an effective, evidence-based form of treatment for a wide variety of issues, including depression, anxiety and relationship issues. CBT is based on the premise that what we tell ourselves about situations (our "self-talk") shapes how we feel and act. Challenging our negative self-talk and telling ourselves the truth about ourselves and the world around us helps us feel and act in more positive and satisfying ways.

Acceptance and Commitment

Acceptance and Commitment

For many individuals, distress in the form of anxiety or depression stems from unsuccessful efforts to "get rid" of unpleasant thoughts or emotions. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is a powerful form of CBT that equips you to respond "well" to emotional distress in ways that actually reduces the negative impact of the distress and empowers you to "act" in ways that are true to your values and goals.

Dialectical Behavior

Dialectical Behavior

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an approach that teaches four specific skills to help you bounce back from emotionally distressing situations. "Dialectical" means the bringing together of opposite ideas: in this case the opposing notions of Acceptance and Change. DBT counselling promotes Acceptance of life's stressors using the skills of mindfulness and distress tolerance and also promotes Change using the skills of emotional regulation and distress tolerance.

Solution-Focused

Solution-Focused

Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) is a very practical, positive and strength-based approach that focuses on creating solutions for a better future. Working together we identify past and present factors contributing to the problem, we identify your strengths and unused resources, set specific goals and then work towards specific changes that would make your present and future better.
